Genesis 22 for Tomorrow

Tomorrow you are going to read 3 deep chapters.  I wanted to carve out the first 19 verses as a pre-read.  Years ago,  I read this, and I met up with a woman later that day.   I said (with astonishment)  “Did you know that Genesis 22 is a foreshadow of the Gospel??” I do love this woman, her name was Tedi,  but she had been marinating in Christian circles all her life and she said: “Well, of course, I do….everyone knows that”.  NO, I didn’t know that!! (as a matter of fact, I had never even heard of this story)

I never want to assume “everyone knows that”…Chapter 22:1-19.  Here is the first 19 verses:

Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of MoriahSacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”

“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.

“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your sonyour only son.”

13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”

15 The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time 16 and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed,[c] because you have obeyed me.”

19 Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

It is a story inside a story. There is a foreshadow of Jesus on the Cross, however, there is also the story of our death being replaced by one provided for us.

Mount Moraiah=Calvary- was an area where an indigenous plant grew called Acacia.  The ram’s head was wrapped in this plant.  Here is a picture of Acacia-

  1. I LOVE this story!!! I grew up in church but didn’t really dive deep until I was an adult. I also didn’t actually understand the foreshadowing until the first time I read through the Bible (with you) in 2010!! Those thorns still give me chills🙌🏻

    1. I love the humbleness of this group!! I love that we ask questions and point out what we learn. I ask questions all day long at work (Hmmm, is that why I see people turning the other way?) I sit with the woman at lunch and we read scriptures in all different versions trying to unpack them sometimes. If we ever read a chapter and something wasn’t “new” to us, then we should read it again!

  2. I have goosebumps this morning. I had NEVER understood that foreshadowing as it was explained here. I just always looked at it as Obedience and the Lord providing. And the thorns…. I’m weeping as I type.

  3. I absolutely love this story. I’ve understood the deep foreshadowing for many years BUT THE ACACIA?? Stop the presses!! I never knew this. 🎤 DROP MOMENT. Wow. Sometimes I just get goosebumps at how cool God is. All the way back then, He had a plan and He was already opening the cover of the book so He could reveal it to us. I’m seriously speechless.
