Genesis 4-7

Chapter 4: Cain and Abel.  All I can say right now is the reason I committed to this Bible read-through is that I relate more to Cain than I do Abel.  How sad my offerings have become.   My time, my gifts, my money, my service….

6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

A few weeks ago God grabbed me by the shirt collar and gave me this to chew on…

 If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them. James 4:17

So let’s get to Genesis 5…such fun!  Have a pencil and your Bible in hand.  I know the genealogies can be boring, and we tend to look at how long they lived but there are hidden gems throughout the Bible. This is just one of them…

In your Bible, in this Genealogy, write the Hebrew translation above the names…

  • 3 When Adam  (Man) had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth.
  • 6 When Seth (Appointed) had lived 105 years, he became the father[k] of Enosh.
  • 9 When Enosh (Mortal) had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan.
  • 12 When Kenan (Sorrow) had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel. 1
  • 15 When Mahalalel (The Blessed God) had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared.
  • 18 When Jared (Shall come Down) had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch.
  • 21 When Enoch (Teaching/Walking with God) had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. 
  • 25 When Methuselah (His Death Shall Bring)  had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. 2
  • 28 When Lamech (Despairing) had lived 182 years, he had a son. 29 He named him Noah
  • 32 After Noah (Comfort, Rest)  was 500 years old,

Man (is) appointed mortal sorrow (but) The Blessed God shall come down teaching.  His death shall bring (the) despairing comfort.

There are 2 people ever in history to be taken up to heaven by the Lord without dying…do you know them? One was in this reading….Enoch.  Who is the other? 😁

Noah, the son of Lamech (Lamech: the very man that bragged that you could kill someone and God would protect you (4:24) clearly he misunderstood God).  (read in comments why this was crossed out) Even if you do not go to church, you may have heard of Noah.  If you have gone to church all your life, know that you can read this story and still see something new.   I have read this chapter many times and each time I am like “What??? that wasn’t in there the last time I read it.”

We now know from this document that people knew how to worship the Lord (proven with Cain and Abel).  Cain had to suffer the consequences, however, God still blessed him with a family and a hedge of protection.   I can just picture Enoch and Methuselah sitting around talking to his family about sacrificing an innocent animal to “atone” for our sins just as God modeled in Eden for us.

Chapter 6 & 7

Hebrews 11:7 sums up the entire account of Noah: : By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.

What is Faith?  Hebrews 11:1  “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

– So Noah, the man who God knows as blameless (not perfect, but righteous) is the only one on earth found righteous because he had faith, confidence, and hope when given such a task.

So this man is asked to make a box called an Ark.  In this box Noah and his family will get in it (IGod will give him 120 years to get the Ark made and bags packed). Oh, and he will share it with every animal possible (some in a set of 2, some in a group of 14).  Why would we need sets of 14? 😁  Some will be used for sacrifices.

6:22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him

FAITH!  He didn’t tell him why or what was going to happen…until after Noah obeyed.

  • go back and underline in your Bible 6:18-the 1st time the word Covenant is used (out of 332 times)

The flood is a foreshadow of final judgment.  This Ark, about the size of the Titanic, was a foreshadow of salvation.

I purposely left out some interesting things just to see if I can get some comments. 😂

  2. “Lamech: the very man that bragged that you could kill someone and God would protect you (4:24) clearly he misunderstood God).”-Isn’t this verse referring to Lamech, son of Methushael from the line of Cain; NOT Lamech, son of Methuselah from the line of Seth?

    Two Lamechs and two Enochs in Genesis 4 & 5-one from each line. Confusing! Just wanting to make sure I’m following along correctly. I can get easily lost in the OT. 😆

    1. I really never read it that close before that there were 2 lines so obviously stated. I saw the names twice and assumed “overlap in documents”. I left it in the post as a cross out so that people would see the mistake. Thank you so much for not reading it so quickly to point that out to me. I am excited this year that I am going to learn more from the comments of this site than I will from my commentaries. (It really drives home when I said “Every time we read the Bible we see new things…EVERY TIME). Keep them coming!!

      1. I never noticed it either until now. Reading the OT has always intimidated and overwhelmed me. In the past I’ve “skimmed” the surface. But there’s so much truth and beauty in God’s word. Why would I let it intimidate me? This year I’m determined to dive deep into the OT. Thank you for sharing this reading plan and the work you’ve put into it! I’m excited for what the year and God’s word has in store!

  3. Since we are reading about the Ark. If you are a visual person as I am. The Ark Encounter is really worth your trip. Things I didn’t think about how they fed the animals, got rid of there waste, and was able to get light are a few things to discover.

    1. It really is neat. I was talking with my youngest son tonight about the thin I’ve been reading and he was able to really visualize what I was talking about b/c we had been there. We might just have to make another trip up there. It’s such a cool experience and totally points the way to Christ.

  4. The story of Noah & the Ark always intrigues me. God gives him specific instructions of what seems like crazy things to do and it never mentions that “Noah was hesitant” or “Noah questioned”- it just says over & over “He did EVERYTHING God had commanded him.” I want to have that kind of faith!! I can’t imagine what the inside of the ark looked like or how in the world a Tiger didn’t eat a cat or how a cat didn’t eat a mouse etc! And all the poop! Gag! 🤢

    1. That is why the Ark Encounter is so interesting.
      It is built on the exact measurements of the Bible. You get to walk through the replica and see how they fed, watered,removed the waste, cages of the animals, and got light. It is amazing.

  5. Sorry this is so long!! 😳
    I’m so excited to find this blog! A friend recommended it to me when I shared on FB that I was reading chronologically this year! So many thoughts and questions!!😂 I had already read the first two days and jumped up and grabbed my Bible after reading your commentaries to add the 🔺where I had already underlined!!
    Just a few thoughts from the first 2 days:
    *Vs 2:7 had me humming the verse in the song, “it’s your breath, in our lungs..”
    *While God is the God of details, why does He leave out a big chunk of detail as to where the “anyone” come from in vs 4:14. 🤔😁
    *Vs 4:7-8 different sentences stood out to me as well. “You will be accepted if you do what is right…..sin is crouching….you must subdue it and be it’s master”. Cain didn’t do that and look what happened….Cain attacked his brother. He didn’t get a handle on his jealousy or his anger and that sin mastered him into submission of wrong doing! If not by for the grace of God, there go I. If I don’t get a handle on my sins, my sins will be the master of me. Fast forward to 6:7 where God is sorry he ever made the people. I don’t ever want my sins to be the master of me that the Lord says He is sorry He created me!!😢
    One last thing….*Vs 6:20, I thought it was cool that the Lord had all the animals “come to you (him)”. God asked Noah to do something, Noah did it and the Lord provided!! Noah didn’t have to go search for it, God provided and sent it to him!! Just thought that was a cool thing! God will provide what I need! He will have it come to me, I don’t have to search and go get the things. If the Lord wants me to do something then the Lord will provide and have it come to me!

    1. Promise me you will comment every day! I love your comment about mastering sin. Too often I have said “God forgives me”…so I don’t lean into the effort of not letting the sin master me.

  6. I am blown away! I’ve shared this with many people after reading.
    God’s word is alive and active. He stirs my spirit and encourages me to seek after Him. Our Abba Father is so so good.
    As far as the ark. I too have often wondered how smelly it probably had to have been.

    “In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month, on that day all the ***springs of the great deep*** burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.”
    -Genesis 8:1-2
    “But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded. Now the ***springs of the deep ***and the floodgates of the heavens had been closed, and the rain had stopped falling from the sky.”
    -Proverbs 8:27-28
    “I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the ***fountains of the deep***.”
    -Fountains and springs of the deep? For centuries people thought this was just a figure of speech.
    -In 1977 they discovered the first spring off the coast of Ecuador, 1 ½ miles under water, pumping out water at 450 degrees.
    -You can go on the geological societies website and find there is no other information on the springs of the deep until that discovery in 1977.
    -Most modern writings prior to 1977 don’t describe this, and NO OTHER ancient text besides the bible does.

    -How would the biblical writers know this had God not told them?
    -Either the ancient biblical writers are consistently lucky, or they’re accurate.

So Genesis 6:4 has some very interesting things in there!! “ The Nephilim were on the Earth in those days, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them.” 😮😮 WHAT?!!? So angels (nephilim) had sex with human women that resulted in children?!? What did they look like? What were they called? What happened to them? Does that happen anywhere else in the Bible? Did they get on the ark? Are there possibly descendants of them ?
    (Oh so many questions!?!)

    1. Mindy! It is such Providence that I met you last week. This was the exact thing I left out of the post to see if anyone would comment about it. The “overall” answer is: I have no clue! But here are some of my thoughts: Yes, I think the fallen angels did have prison conjugal visits 😁 and made babies. As far as what they looked like I think they were probably beautiful since I think when God made angels they looked like underwear models 😂 Did this continue? Possibly. When the twelve spies in Numbers 13 went into the land they reported they saw Nephilim in Canaan. The Greek translation is “giant”, so it could have been a metaphor but I tend to read the Bible very literally so I just assume they are. Was it as prominent as it was in the time of Noah? I don’t think so. They know that God brought a judgment to the earth to rid them of the evil they had populated so they got the message. So my question was/is…if angels are immortal, even fallen ones, what happened at the flood to them. So I lean on the possibility that God punished them even further than casting them out of Heaven when Lucifer rebelled. He chained them up! Jude 1:6 says: “And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.” They will be released at the end of the Tribulation and then cast into Hell with Satan, the antichrist, and the false prophet. All that to say, those are just thoughts…I really don’t know. But there isn’t a page in the Bible we don’t see Satan’s attempts to dismantle God’s plan of salvation. They tried by dancing the horizontal mamba with humans…but their attempts will always fail.

  9. Thanks for your thoughts on 6:4. This has always been such a mysterious verse. I am just curious as to why the Angels were referred to as the sons of God? Why would the Bible state in this way?

  11. So something Lucas said in last years read through has really stuck with me (Lucas maybe you can help me reference it) regarding pride, something God really hates. My thought is that in Genesis we are the only creation made in the image of God. How sin first gets to us through pride in ourselves, thinking we know better than the Lord, or simply not acting in faith and trust in God but leaning on our own understanding.(Proverbs 3:5-6). How life itself(abortion, euthanasia for example) is seen through sin rather than through the creator of life in whose image we are made. Ephesians 4:17-24 talks how not knowing the Lord, We walked in darkness…, but in Christ to put off the old self…”to be made new in the attitude of your minds, and put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” And Colosians 3:10-“..put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”❤️

    1. Patti, my apologies to the late reply. I never got a notification that you mentioned me!
      But in response to the pride and creation story, check out Psalms 10:4.. It says “in his pride the wicked man does not seek God. In all his thoughts there is not room for him.”
      Eve and Adam (who was with her) had a self righteous desire to become “like God,” as satan told them they would…
      At the end of the day, we have to remember we are “human beings.” And God is the “supreme being.” We are not like God, nor will we be.
      And that would be a good difference in being made “in his image.” Even though we are made in his image, we are still human beings and he is still the supreme being.
      But pride can blind us from God like the Psalmist says. Look at the nation of Israel. They become a world power, and then they fall. Check Isaiah 9:10… They didn’t turn back to God. They thought they could just rebuild with better materials and be stronger than ever….
      It was pride.
      Without God, we are nothing. And that’s why we need to be in a relationship with him.
